English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.
In English, students learn about the study and use of the English language in its various textual forms. These encompass spoken, written and visual texts through which meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted and reflected. Complexity increases as students progress through their schooling.
Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators; critical and imaginative thinkers; lifelong learners; and informed, active participants in Australian society. Their understanding of English through knowledge and skills acquisition is essential to their intellectual, social and emotional development.
The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:
- English Extension 1
- English Extension 2
- English Advanced
- English Standard
- English Studies
- English EAL/D (English as a Second Language)
Debating at Blacktown Girls High School
Blacktown Girls High School has a proud and longstanding tradition of excellence in debating.
We have two competitive teams in each stage - Stage 4, Stage 5, and Stage 6, who regularly participate in the Premier’s Debating Challenge and attend debating events at the University of Sydney, including Senior Debate Day, Junior Debate Day, and the Women and Gender Minorities Debate Day.
Our students are also provided with numerous opportunities to excel individually in the wider debating community, including selection for the Junior State Debating Squad and the CHS Combined Team. BGHS debaters have proudly represent the Western Sydney Team at the Junior State Debating Championships (JSDC), Junior State Debating Finals at the Women’s College and University of Sydney, where they compete against the top 10 schools in the state.
We are committed to developing the next generation of skilled debaters by offering coaching not only to our current teams, but also to students identified as having potential for future competitions.
Public Speaking and the Model UN at Blacktown Girls
Public speaking is a valued tradition at Blacktown Girls High School, with students offered a wide range of opportunities to develop their confidence and voice. We participate in prestigious competitions including the Junior Public Speaking Competition, the Plain English Speaking Award, Rostrum NSW Voice of Youth, and the NSW EVATT (UN Youth) Competition. Our vibrant Model United Nations (MUN) team is an active presence in the MUN community, regularly participating in and convening events such as PMUN (Pymble Ladies’ College MUN) Winter Conference, the NSW Inter-School MUN Conference, Discover MUN at the University of NSW and the Knox Grammar Conference. In addition, we proudly host our own MUN event, BG MUN (Blacktown Girls MUN), established in 2023, which welcomes 1000 students of both public and private schools across the state.
